Enveloping properties of passenger tire at slow speeds are described as piecewise linear system; linear approximation enables calculation of enveloping forces for arbitrary road contours; descriptions lead to convenient quantitative characterization of tire; examination of commercial passenger tire provides spectral description of its force responses; pneumatic components of enveloping forces are bulk of content; components originate from manner in which distortions at road surface are transmitted about tire and affect volume of air cavity; it is largely for these reasons that distortion transmitting peculiarities of tire design affect frequency content of enveloping forces.
