Objective of work was to demonstrate mercury electron-bombardment ion thruster performance suitable for station-keeping and attitude control of satellites; performance data are presented for two flight-type thrusters as well as for extended test with preliminary design; schematic view of thruster, indicating relative locations of discharge chamber, cathode, distributor, magnetic coil, and accelerator grids, is shown; lower limit for thrust of electron-bombardment ion thruster appears to be about 0.1 to 0.3 mlb for satisfactory performance.
