Navy Navigation Satellite System is capable of providing highly accurate position fix information on world-wide basis through use of constellation of orbiting near earth artificial satellites; position is determined from data giving satellite position in space and measurement of doppler shift of stable signals transmitted by satellite; system is comprised of constellation of satellites in polar orbits, four tracking stations, two injection stations, and computation and control center; most immediate requirement for aircraft that can be satisfied by satellite system is to improve capabilities of aircraft inertial, doppler, and inertial/doppler navigation systems.
