Report of tests demonstrating that use of dip transfer gas shielded electrode method of welding is satisfactory for making medium and small scale models of ship structures; models might be regarded as 1/3 or 1/4 scale, thickness of material ranging from 0.15 to 0.27 in., and incorporate fillet welds, butt welds in plating, and correctly scaled details at intersections; two models were tested in elastic range and to collapse; loadings on second grillage model included fairly concentrated local load over individual plate panels representing, e.g., wheel load on full-scale structure; associated stiffener stresses were much larger than anticipated.
