Modern industrial production methods are discussed and way in which shipbuilding has developed in last 50 yr is reviewed; task of shipbuilding industry in 1970's is foreshadowed, and outline proposals for shipyards in that period are given; it is shown how technology of shipbuilding might evolve, including widespread use of computers in design, automation in handling steelwork through to welding and inspection, and use of new materials. 35th Andrew Laing Lecture 1966.
