Hull section, 34 ft long, was built using new form of cellular sandwich construction and is to undergo extensive testing by British Ministry of Defence (Navy); section represents part of vessel of 600 tons displacement and 160 ft in length; only materials used are glass fiber and polyester resin; foams and fire retardants have been rejected because of low creep strength in shear and toxic fumes on burning; absence of framing provides 30% more space, and fuel savings can be gained from lighter weight, smoother hull, and reduced fouling.
