Consideration of computer program for ship design and extension for treatment of operating costs, in relation to use of operations research in ship design; it is suggested standard for judging ship economic quality should be shipowner's achievable net profit rather than profitability of capital invested; three point method is recommended; this involves calculating three complete designs (mean, higher and lower service speeds) to give three points in profit-speed diagram, which are connected by curve that will show maximum profit and optimum speed ranges.
