Hydrodynamic features of bulk carriers, tankers, cargo liners and passenger vessels from about 400 to 1000 ft in length with service speeds from just below 20 knots to above 30 knots, with propelling powers up to about 100,000 hp on one or two shafts; criteria for power requirements in calm water; effects on propulsive efficiency of varying propeller diameter and rate of rotation, and possible advantages of contra-rotating and ducted propellers; factors affecting ship performance in waves, maneuverability and steering qualities; effects of bulbous and ram bows; possible future developments in ships designed for supercritical operation, submarine tankers and cargo ships, and very high speed displacement ships.
