Some thoughts are presented on important decisions to be made by shipowners before design stage of cargo liner; attention is paid to modern trends in deadweight and cubic capacity, speed, lay-out of holds, cargo gear, passenger accommodation and special cargo; economy of further increase in speed is questioned because of long periods spent by liners in port.
