Inquiry into problem of modeling surface ship in irregular seas as nonlinear, time-invariant system when its motions are large; consideration is given to N.Wiener theory of nonlinear systems; particular attention is given to explicit, time-domain, functional representations of output of nonlinear system in terms of its input; Volterra and Wiener kernels and their transforms are defined and methods for their determination are noted; examples show application to ship motion problems.
