Approximate expressions are derived for radar (backscatter) cross sections of wakes of vehicles in ionosphere; vehicle speed is assumed to be much greater than ion thermal speed but much less than electron thermal speed; it is shown that, under broadside incidence conditions, large region of mild electron depletion behind vehicle can give rise to backscatter cross sections approaching 100 m2; orientation of velocity vector with respect to local geomagnetic field is also shown to be important.
