Survey and study of interaction between advances in structural design and analysis throughout history of aeronautics; problems experienced, solutions developed, and research carried out to meet requirements of aerospace structures are discussed and types of structures shown; theoretical investigations in progress over half century clarified problems of buckling of thin-walled circular cylindrical shells subjected to uniform axial compression; future research to solve buckling of imperfection-sensitive shells and behavior of very flexible membrane shells which promise to be useful. Presented before Third AIAA Annual Meeting, Boston, Mass, Nov 29 1966.
