Brief description of principles and technical realization of electrostatic propulsion is given together with derivation of formulas for thrust and electrical efficiency; contact ion sources based on Langmuir effect, and ion sources based on ionization by impact of fast electrons, are considered; power supply problems and operational possibilities of electrostatic propulsion system are examined; physical characteristics of some potential ion supply sources are listed in table.
