Study of characteristics of probable missions in post-1970 period, classified as near-Earth, advanced lunar and planetary missions; requirements for entry vehicles for near-Earth missions are dictated by maneuverability, reusability, and landing considerations; development of reusable entry vehicles with thermal-protection systems that can be refurbished is desirable and four systems are studied -- all-ablation system of elastomeric material, ablation-plus-reradiation system, ablation-over-reradiation system, and reradiation transpiration-cooled system; nature and types of lifting-entry vehicles in manned planetary missions.
