Reliability problem of long-duration interplanetary missions is explored; using Apollo reliability assessments, extent of mission reliability/crew safety problem is established; failures are accepted, identified, and programmed into design by application of availability concept, which establishes balance between system performance, reliability, and maintainability within constraints of crew capabilities, mission, and technical state-of-art; concept is applied to environmental control system, to life-support system, and flyby spacecraft system.
