Paper, using Sikorsky S-61L and N Models as representative of maximum experience helicopter with both commercial airline and offshore oil operators, attempts to define commercial helicopter operation problems which manifest themselves mainly in low financial returns; areas of current maintenance difficulties and their possible solutions; design, maintenance, and performance are considered on basis of future of VTOL operation.
