Development background of XH-51A rigid rotor compound helicopter which was derivative of basic XH-51/Model 286 helicopter, built by Lockheed Aircraft Corp; aircraft has attained level flight high speed of 302 mph and is powered by one Pratt and Whitney Pt-6 550 hp engine driving main rotor and one Pratt and Whitney JT-12 3000 lb thrust engine for forward propulsion; using XH-51A and AH-56 technology, series of compound commercial transport aircraft ranging from 30 to 100 passengers has been studied; factors considered such as frequency of service, cost of transportation to passenger, city-to-city distances, availability and construction costs of heliports, etc.
