Paper presents review of several proposed car following models, fundamental diagrams that they imply, and new generalized model; perceptual factors involved in following vehicle in front are examined and relation to fundamental diagram of road traffic is established; car following law expressed by given equation appears to be consistent with concept of acceleration of follower being proportional to rate of change of visual angle; proposed law is based on assumption that driver, in following vehicle, imparts to his vehicle acceleration proportional to relative velocity and, in various degrees, inversely proportional to given spacing.
