Study of impact of shells into water finds application in problems associated with water landings of spacecraft, water entry of torpedoes, and slamming of ships in heavy seas; hydroelastic interaction between shell and incompressible fluid upon vertical impact is considered; hydroelastic response of flexible shell is obtained by numerical solution of combined hydrodynamic and shell equations; numerical results show that for axially symmetric impact of shell studied, interaction between shell and fluid produces appreciable differences in overall acceleration of center of gravity of shell, and in distribution of pressures and responses; however, maximum responses are within 15% of those produced when interaction between fluid and shell is neglected.
