Extension of theory for ship dynamics in shallow water of infinite width (see Engineering Index 1966 p 3223), to treat case where vertical sidewalls are present; for simplicity, attention is concentrated on case of subcritical motion along center of canal of rectangular cross-section, width of which is comparable with ship length but large compared with canal depth and beam and draft of ship; plot is shown for aircraft carrier and four merchant ship forms, and appendix gives empirical result for narrow canals.
