Devices for registering deflection of fenders and forces imposed on jetty structure during berthing of tankers are described; echo-ranging gear was fitted at each end of jetty head, to measure approach speed of tankers; observations are analyzed, classified statistically and processed by computer methods to provide estimate of maximum impact forces which arise during life of jetty; study was made of effect of variation in size of tankers; it is shown how information can be applied to preparation of design specification for tanker berth.
