Origins of development during last few years of U S Coast Guard rescue craft, some considerations of surf characteristics, and implementation of program; design envisions boat with length of about 26 ft and speed in state 3 seas of at least 20 knots, diesel-propelled, and capable of negotiating up to possible maximum of 10 ft plunging surf; self-righting capability and positive flotation to prevent sinking in event of swamping was desired; it is noted craft of this type could be used as supplemental, or "back-up", boat at lifeboat stations, though not requiring all-weather capabilities of 44-ft motor lifeboat.
