Demand for heavy trains required to run at 200 km/hr has compelled French National Railways to develop C-C locomotives of 7400 hp for a-c and d-c lines; C-C 21,000 weighs 119 tons in working order and has continuous ratings of 5760 kw on 1500 v d-c and 5650 kw on 25 kv a-c on both gear ratios, which are calculated for maximum speeds of 220 and 100 km/hr; in electrical design of locomotive unusual step was taken of relying on self-ventilation of 2750 kw traction motors, each of which has two 1500 v armatures in tandem within common frame; d-c resistance control system is used for rheostatic braking whether locomotive is set up for a-c or d-c traction.
