Results of first phase of development program to produce family of split path hydromechanical transmissions for military applications; constant speed drive technology provided basis for basic ratio changing device of transmission; to adapt system for vehicle requirements it was necessary to increase range of ratio coverage greatly, and to develop new control capable of automatic selection of ratios to match engine output to varying vehicle load requirements; HMT-250 hydromechanical transmission has given superior performance, unlimited ability to change ratio without affecting service life, and control system with advantages of variable ratio.
