Leyland group's decision to set up Butec subsidiary to manufacture starters, alternators and regulators created new situation in heavy commercial vehicle electrical equipment field; new equipment is of high quality and designed for ease of maintenance; Butec philosophy has been to find high-quality product already in existence and develop it to suit chosen market, with particular emphasis on standardization; some of units are described; C.A.V., principal manufacturer in this field, has different approach, and emphasis is on research and development; recent development not yet in production is complete encapsulation of starter windings on C.A.V. AC7 alternator.
