Navigational system is described which determines aircraft true heading and altitude intercept from which position is established; light from celestial body is automatically and continuously tracked with stabilized telescope using photomultiplier tube as sensor; although described for aircraft use, system can be adapted to ships, submarines and land-based vehicles; topics considered include geometric considerations, signal detection, snr, gyro compensation, and accuracy analysis; astro compass navigational systems may be integrated into more complex guidance systems, especially in space applications.
