Review of atmospheric turbulence measurements and aircraft response measurements obtained in thunderstorms at 40,000-ft altitude; time histories of vertical and lateral components of true gust velocities are considered to indicate irregular nature of velocity fluctuations for large range of wavelengths; spectra of turbulence and rms gust velocities are used to compare turbulence intensities of several meteorological conditions and variation within given storm; flight measurements of aircraft motions and displacements are evaluated to show altitude deviations, vertical accelerations, and attitude variations during traverses of severe storms.
