Three-phase drag reduction program on Model 990 which is medium range swept-wing 4-engine turbofan transport powered by 4 General Electric aft-fan engines; topic of paper is final phase, in which aircraft drag rise was markedly reduced as result of local application of area rule technique to nacelle-pylon-wing regions; modifications to aircraft for delaying drag rise included forward pylon fairing, aft pylon fairing, and 4 terminal fairings added to inboard sides of nacelles; methods employed to identify and isolate interference drag phenomena on aircraft and analytical approach to problem solution; results and data analysis.
