Difficulty which meteorologist is facing in assessing impact of CAT (clear-air-turbulence) on SCAT (supersonic commercial air transport) is that turbulence is small-scale phenomenon which eludes radiosonde network; atmospheric parameters and conditions of flow investigated for possible correlations with CAT and physical causes of CAT; CAT associated with leewave formation is considered harassing feature of SCAT operations, at least over larger mountain ranges; project TOPCAT, clear-air turbulence measurement program carried out in 1963 and future research needed.
