Early concepts of stratosphere and efforts made to explain stratosphere by means of meteorological rockets and rocket grenade experiments; circulation of stratosphere; thermal structure of stratosphere which is region bounded by cold layer at base and warm layer at top; base layer is cold and high at equator, sloping downward toward poles to relative warm (-50 C) low altitude of 10-km or less in subpolar regions; operation of vehicles in this region requires increased knowledge relative to environmental interactions and propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic energy into surrounding atmosphere.
