Report of Research Council on Pipeline Crossings of Railroads and Highways of Pipeline Div; stresses due to external loads, and interaction effects between pressure and external loads were found to be small from analysis of strain gage data obtained by Assn of American Railway Laboratories for simulated highway and railroad crossings by uncased 8 and 12 in. pipe lines; comparison of test data with theoretical calculations is encouraging and suggest that refinement to theory would produce useful results towards establishing design basis; analysis of 8 in. pipe data and tests on larger size pipe are recommended.
