Vertically oriented satellites instrumenting orbital plane exhibit certain gyroscopic properties; if one or more integrating gyroscopes are properly installed, characteristic may be used to accomplish semipassive damping of vehicle librations; vehicle oscillations cause gimbal precession in gyroscopes; damping occurs because of energy dissipation as heat in viscous restraint of each gyro; systems described comprise only gyro or gyros, properly supplied with constant power; neither external error sensing nor on-board computation is required.
