Ability of free flight range to measure optical radiation and ionization generated by body in high speed flight is shown by tests; immediate application of measurements obtained is research on re-entry of long range missile into earth's atmosphere; ability of test performed in range to produce conditions of optical radiation and ionization that occur during actual full scale re-entry depends on velocities, pressures, and model configurations used for test.
