In designing spacecraft to transport one particular payload (robot roving vehicle) to moon, it was found advantageous to make spacecraft self-sufficient, i.e., able to land on moon without aid from its payload; with this self-sufficiency, spacecraft became general purpose truck that could support first lunar explorers and later supply manned lunar bases; chief criteria for design are that landing maneuver be simple, that safe landing can be made despite small errors in maneuver, and that payload can be unloaded with mechanical aids.
