Proposed Apollo modes considered were -- direct flight mode, using Nova launch vehicle, earth orbital rendezvous (EOR) mode, requiring separate Saturn launches of tanker and manned spacecraft, and lunar orbital rendezvous (LOR) mode, requiring Saturn launch of manned spacecraft and lunar excursion module; description of three modes and results of analysis; major selection criterion was mission success, and safety; growth potential of each of three modes; schedule and cost advantages, and developmental simplicity of LOR led to its selection as prime mode.
