Rio Hudson, Rio Panama, Rio de la Plata, and Rio de Janeiro, built by Sun Shipbuilding Co, Chester, Pa, originally intended for Moore-McCormack Lines Service, taken over by U S Navy; original arrangement of ships; length oa 492 ft; breadth 69 ft 6 in.; depth molded 42 ft 6 in.; propelled by two 6-cyl Sun-Doxford engines each developing 4500 bhp at 180 rpm; ships are first ever equipped with Sun-Doxford engines arranged to drive through reduction gears.
