Problems associated with determination of aircraft weight and balance have generated different weight/balance systems; Fairchild Controls S TAN system is on-board weight and balance system, presently used by Pan American on its cargo aircraft; it operates by sensing air pressure in each of three landing gear struts; computer sums three signals and shows airplane weight on digital readout on flight engineer's panel; it also computes and displays center of gravity of airplane through relationship of nose gear and main gear loads; results of 1 1/2-yr operational experience are tabulated.
