Gas turbine engine maintenance design objectives prerequisite to increased on-wing repair are cited and discussed; major engine sections need to be of modular construction, readily separable and replaceable on aircraft; module replacement time should not exceed that normally required to change engine; inspection access should be provided to determine adequately condition of installed module components, such as all stages of compressor and turbine as well as entire burner section; aim is to replace module only when its condition warrants removal; engine, as installed, should not interfere with inspection provisions.
