Meaning of "inlet-engine integration" is illustrated by examining some areas for future effort which are quantitatively evaluated and include inlet-engine airflow matching, effect of engine stalls on duct weight and role of inlet controls; some examples of current practice are discussed including use of boundary layer air for engine nozzle cooling, "rpm lockup" for airflow control, and effect of shock position limiting feature in inlet control; some suggested ground rules and procedures for inlet-engine integration programs are presented, based on experience gained in design of one of North American Rockwell's recent supersonic aircraft.
