One method studied uses retractable airfoil in front of cowl to generate thrust; other method involves hinging cowl lip inward so that captured airflow is choked, thus lowering pressures on external surfaces; both schemes were successful in reducing drag at captured airflow rates less than choking point of plain inlet; although drag was not reduced below critical drag of plain inlet, tests indicate that this may be possible.
