Studies and research, on high-speed atmospheric propulsion led Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales, France, to flight-test ten ramjet missiles; operation received code name of `Stataltex'; four missiles reached flight speed of nearly 4600 fps (about Mach number 5) between altitudes of 40,000 and 115,000 ft; information obtained in course of this study is described; results obtained, about 1000 sec of specific impulse at Mach number 5, are in agreement with theoretical predictions; knowledge acquired has provided useful data applicable to eventual atmospheric booster able to reach Mach number 5.
