Investigation in specially instrumented supersonic transport (SST) fuel-system test rig revealed thermal-stability problem areas in fuel tanks and engine components which are considered with respect to their significance to development of SST; results from test rig are compared with results of small-scale fuel thermal-stability devices showing that greater accuracy and repeatability are necessary to evaluate fuel suitability for SST; with improved thermal-stability measurement accuracy and repeatability, design margins can be reduced; need for continued fuel-systems research is indicated.
