Object and purpose of research. The purpose of this work is to outline the main fields of ship seakeeping science, in the historical succession of their formation at Krylov Centre. This paper discusses main parameters that determine ship seakeeping performance: motions, wave-induced forces, deck wetness, slamming, capsizing risk. Materials and methods. Theoretical solutions to seakeeping problems are mainly based on the methods of hydrodynamic motions theory, as well as on the methods of linear and non-linear oscillation theory. Non-conventional tasks are solved through seakeeping model tests in waves with specified parameters. Main results. This methods enable, for specific ship, quantitative determination of her seakeeping parameters for given navigation conditions in real waves. Conclusion. Seakeeping performance of ship is determined by a number of parameters being its complex characteristic. Seakeeping studies are performed taking into account operational tasks and conditions of given ship.
