Object and purpose of research: This paper studies Russian diesel power plants of naval ships, submarines of various classes and auxiliary vessels. The paper is intended to formulate the requirements to advanced main diesels and diesel-generators, to trace out the development prospects of Russian diesel power plants and their application aboard Russian naval ships. Materials and methods: The study follows the methods of system analysis and system approach, as well as the principles of historical continuity and comparability of similar Russian and foreign marine diesel power plants. Main results: The paper investigates the trends in development of marine diesel power plants, main diesels and auxiliary diesel-generators, systematizing their main advantages and disadvantages. It also discusses the most promising designs for the main components of these power plants, analyses technical and economic parameters of modern and advanced diesel power plants, as well as tackles the issue of import substitution in Russian diesel building. Conclusion: The paper suggests further development variants for Russian diesel power plants, justifying the requirements to the main elements of diesel power plants intended for application aboard naval ships and conventional submarines.
