The exploitation of the Central Parametric Aircraft Configuration Scheme (CPACS) data format for military aircraft design started in 2012 after the project was made available for the publicity. The main motivation was to establish a central geometry model to enable automated simulation model generation and shape optimization with high-level engineering parameters. The extensions and developments in the definition and geometry generation to achieve this are described. Starting with the wing and fuselage structural entities, control surfaces, landing gears, systems and the development of the in-house software Descartes. A special focus are the research projects (e.g. UCAV-2010, AGILE, Diabolo, and others) which are supporting these developments and the application of these developments is shown with different reference aircraft developed in these projects. The ongoing developments are described and an outlook of future challenges is given as conclusion.
