Today, the manufacturing industry has to strengthen its competitiveness, especially through innovation and improvements in business processes, such as logistics and manufacturing. Information technology is a key element in such a strategy. Overwhelmed by Japanese and American competition, European SMEs (small & medium size enterprises) need a tool making them able to speed up their response to customers requests and to reach a significant improvement in their service level. MUSSELS, A Multi Site and Multi Stage Enterprises Logistic control System, is the realization of a general logistics control system for multi-site and multi-stage environments. It is expected to resolve the problems of the traditional Production Planning and Control (PP&C) approaches, by increasing the co-ordination level between the various actors in the logistics chain, enabling them to function as a virtual enterprise.
