This article investigates the appearance of robots on stage in contemporary performance. As a convincing demonstration of the relevance of robots – as artifact, concept and metaphor – we take Blanca Li’s 2013 dance performance Robot! as our starting point. We have distilled five dimensions that provide vocabulary and terminology to characterise different instances of robots on stage with a focus on their expressive character.
