The rate of operation of China's highway tunnel lighting is generally low, generally less than 40% of the national standard value and far below the national standard. There is significant contradiction between energy saving of tunnel lighting and traffic safety, and it is always leading to serious visual illusion. Drivers will underestimate the driving speed, overestimate the car-following distance under lower lighting condition. As a result, over-speed behaviors and accidents like rear-end collision or hitting the side wall would possibly occur. This paper summarizes the research on the correlation between visual illusion and road environment, new developments of road tunnel lighting (focus on reflective method) and draws the main conclusion that the substance of time-tunnel effect and black-hole or white-hole illusion in highway tunnel is a serious visual illusion. The weak visual reference system in tunnels is the main reason that induces serious visual illusion and causes serious traffic accidents in tunnel environment. Finally, the new theory and evaluating indicator of tunnel lighting based on visual illusion, low-cost tunnel lighting method are discussed in this paper.
