Port Salalah, one of the largest container transshipment terminals in the world, is located in southern Oman on the open coast of the Arabian Sea. High energy wave conditions during the summer monsoon season (khareef) can occasionally cause excessive vessel motions and reduce the efficiency of cargo transfer operations. In order to mitigate these effects and expand the port by adding two additional berths, alternative breakwater and harbor layout configurations were developed and analyzed. Wave conditions were monitored within and outside the port using an array of five wave gauges, for monitoring both short-period (sea and swell) and long-period (infragravity) wave energy. Simultaneously, the surge and sway motions of moored container ships were measured using two vessel motion monitoring systems. Detailed information concerning the vessel characteristics and vessel mooring system layout was also collected for each vessel. Information gained from this monitoring program, combined with extensive numerical and physical hydraulic model testing, provided keen insights into the performance of the existing harbor and potential improvements to mooring practices. This paper provides a description of the approach used to assess the agitation levels in the Port.
