Due to the fast development of marine transportation in China and the increasing amount of coal trading worldwide, the proportion of coal carriers in ocean transportation has increased every year in China. At the same time, the frequency of accidents is also increasing every year. Furthermore, because of the special properties of coal, the safety of coal during marine transportation as bulk cargo attracts extensive attention. In order to avoid accidents during a voyage, both International Maritime Organization and some countries have instituted regulars related. In this paper, the mechanism of coal spontaneous combustion was analyzed and main forecast and prevention technology about coal spontaneous combustion were also summarized. According to the recent accidents during coal marine transportation and based on the latest "International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code", useful recommendations were provided to avoid damage and ensure the coal marine shipping safety.
